The 3D scanning or digitization service is performed through a specialized device, that is, a 3D scanner, whose main objective is to obtain information (geometry and/or texture) of an object or scene, since it is capable of transforming said real object into a virtual one that can later be manipulated with computer equipment and specialized programs.

The purpose of a 3D scanner is to create a cloud or mesh of points from the geometric samples captured from the surface of the object. These points can then be used for processing the shape of the object, at this point it is still far from a solid digital model.

The output file that can be obtained is an STL (dot mesh), this format is commonly used for Additive Manufacturing or 3D printing, other formats obtained are OBJ, PLY, WRL, AOP, ASCII, PTX, E57, XYZRGB .

The information obtained (STL) can be used to build and manipulate three-dimensional digital models that are used in a wide variety of applications such as reverse engineering, quality and inspection (dimensional control), industrial design, medical use ( orthoses, prostheses, dental studies), preservation of cultural heritage, jewelry, architecture, among others.
